Tips on Stripe Terminals

This article covers how to enable and configure tip collection on Stripe payment terminals, and what the experience looks like for your guests.

Overview

With Tips on Stripe Terminals, guests get the flexibility to choose and pay a tip directly from the terminal at the time of checkout. Center owners and managers can offer predefined tip amounts for guests to choose from.

Prerequisites

Before you can enable tip collection on terminals, make sure the following is in place:

  • Organization-level tipping is enabled. Tip-on-terminal can be enabled only when organization-level tipping is enabled. If it is not enabled, the Tip on Terminal checkbox will be disabled and greyed out, with a message: "To enable tip collection from terminal, please enable tip collection at org. level first."

Setting up Tip collection on terminals

Enable or disable Tip on terminal

Users can enable or disable tip collection from the terminal, provided organization-level tip collection is enabled.

The default behavior is to keep this setting disabled. When you enable it, you will see default values applied automatically (Percentage-based tips at 10%, 15%, and 20%).

Choose a Tip suggestion scheme

Once tip collection on terminal is enabled, you can choose from three tip suggestion schemes:

  • Percentage-Based - Suggest tip amounts as a percentage of the invoice total. Default values are 10%, 15%, and 20%.

  • Absolute Amounts - Suggest fixed tip amounts in your local currency.

  • Smart Tip - A smart tip suggestion scheme.

Each scheme includes an explanation with examples so you can understand how it works before selecting it.

Users will seeappropriate textfor tips set at the organization level, andappropriate currencieswherever applicable.

How the Tip is calculated

Tips are calculated on the total discounted invoice amount only, excluding tax, membership points, and similar charges.

Guest experience at Checkout

When the front desk has not added a Tip

If the front desk has not entered any tip amount on the invoice, the guest will see tip suggestions on the terminal. The guest can:

  • Choose from suggested options - The guest sees all suggested tip amounts as configured by center managers/owners and can select any of these. The total amount is calculated based on the selected tip and the total invoice amount.

  • Enter a custom amount - The guest can enter a custom tip amount apart from the suggested options.

  • Skip the tip - The guest can skip the tip altogether.

  • See the total and tippable amount - The guest can see the total and tippable amount on the terminal.

  • Edit the tip - Once a tip is selected or entered, the guest is shown the total amount payable. At this step, they have theoptionto edit the tip. If they choose to edit, they are redirected to thepreviousstep to choose from predefined suggested tips or enter a custom amount.

When the front desk has already added a Tip

If the front desk enters any tip amount in the invoice, guests will see no tip suggestion on the terminal. They will directly see the total amount including the tip on the terminal.
